National Stormwater Calculator

EPA’s National Stormwater Calculator (SWC) estimates the annual amount of rainwater and frequency of runoff from a specific site anywhere in the United States. Estimates are based on local soil conditions, land cover, and historic rainfall records.

The Calculator accesses several national databases that provide soil, topography, rainfall, and evaporation information for the chosen site. The user supplies information about the site’s land cover and selects the types of low impact development (LID) controls they would like to use. The LID controls that the user can choose are the following seven green infrastructure practices:

  • Disconnection

  • Rain harvesting

  • Rain gardens

  • Green roofs

  • Street planters

  • Infiltration basins

  • Porous pavement

Green infrastructure promotes the natural movement of water, instead of allowing it to wash into streets and down storm drains. Green infrastructure also has the added benefit of beautifying neighborhoods and increasing property values.

The SWC estimates runoff at a site based on available information such as soil type, landscape and land-use information, and weather. This update to the SWC will allow users to consider how runoff may vary based on historical weather and potential future climate. To better inform decisions, it is recommended that the user develop a range of SWC results with various assumptions about model inputs such as percent of impervious surface, soil type, sizing of green infrastructure, as well as historical weather and future climate change scenarios. Please check with local authorities about whether and how use of these tools may support local stormwater management goals and requirements.

Clean water is essential to keeping our families and the environment healthy. The Calculator helps protect and restore the environmental integrity of our waterways.

Stormwater Management Books/Publications:

National Management Measures to Control Non-point Source Pollution from Urban Areas

The nation's aquatic resources are among its most valuable assets. Although environmental protection programs in the United States have improved water quality during the past several decades, many challenges remain. Of special concern are the problems in our urban streams, lakes, estuaries, aquifers, and other water bodies caused by runoff that is inadequately controlled or treated. These problems include changes in flow, increased sedimentation, higher water temperature, lower dissolved oxygen, degradation of aquatic habitat structure, loss of fish and other aquatic populations, and decreased water quality due to increased levels of nutrients, metals, hydrocarbons, bacteria, and other constituents.

Principles of Stormwater Management (2018)

This book presents of all aspects of storm water management: the hydrologic cycle, sources of contaminants, standards applicable to discharges, regulatory issues, atmospheric deposition, best management practices, and health/environmental impacts. It includes technical details of the modern treatment of stormwater, the emerging issues of atmospheric deposition, run-on, and snow melt, the Epidemiologic Model, and field data on discharge concentrations of a variety of contaminants. The principles explained in this book will enable students, contractors, developers, and engineers to grasp the most important field elements which must be included for construction projects impacting stormwater.

Urban Flood Mitigation and Stormwater Management (2017)

Effective urban drainage to manage stormwater and control flooding depends on good engineering, especially when an environmentally sustainable approach is being applied. This book covers hydrologic designs for both extreme and frequent events, and reflects the latest revolution in stormwater LID management, and takes a quantitative as well as a qualitative approach.

PowerPoint® presentations and Excel® computer models are provided to follow and build on the exercises in the book. It is written especially for students on urban watershed courses, and also for those studying urban planning, landscaping, water resources, hydrology and hydraulics.

Stormwater Management for Land Development (2018)

With more than 150 helpful illustrations, Stormwater Management for Land Development is the most comprehensive, basic guide to hydraulics, hydrology, and stormwater management design methods for quantity control.
